Prologue - the Christening
The Master of Ceremonies consults his guest list for Princess Aurora's christening while the King and Queen wait for the guests to arrive. The fairies arrive with gifts and blessings for the baby princess. The evil Fairy, Carabosse, arrives with her mischievous minions. She is offended not to have been invited the christening by the Master of Ceremonies. She announces her curse "Aurora will grow up to be a beautiful and charming princess, but one day she will prick her finger on a spindle and die." The Lilac fairy, who has left her gift for last, grants that the Princess will not die but fall into a deep sleep from which she will awoken only by the kiss of love.

The Lilac Fairy arrives and reminds the royal court of her blessing and proceeds to cast the spell of sleep over the castle.

A hundred years pass. Prince Florimund approaches the spot where the sleeping castle is hidden under a forest of thorny roses. The Lilac Fairy appears before him and shows him a vision of the Princess Aurora. Entranced, the young man tries to approach the vision as it suddenly fades.
