Act I
Prince Siegfried celebrates his 21st birthday among his friends.  The Queen Mother arrives at the celebration to offer her gift and remind him that soon he must select a bride.  As night falls, the guests leave and Siegfried's hunting friends see a flight of swans.  Seizing his crossbow, he hurries in pursuit of them.

Act II
At the Lake Siegfried sees a swan whom he is about to shoot when the bird is transformed into the beautiful Odette.  She begs him not to shoot and explains that she and her maidens have fallen under the spell of a wicked enchanter, Baron Von Rothbart:  by day they must assume the form of swans, but at night they can return to their human form.  Only the eternal undying love of a young man for their queen, Odette, can destroy this curse.

Act III
Siegfried must choose a bride from the princesses who have been summoned to a ball.  None attracts him, for he is obsessed with the memory of Odette.  Suddenly Von Rothbart appears bringing with him his daughter. Odile, whom he has caused to look exactly like Odette.  Thinking that Odile is Odette, the prince swears eternal fidelity to her.  As Von Rothbart and his daughter rejoice at their triumph, Odette is seen outside the ballroom windows, and Siegfried despairingly hastens to the lake.

Act IV
The Swan-maidens have learned of the tragedy.  Siegfried finds her at last and implores forgiveness.  But Von Rothbart now has the swan-maidens in his power forever.  In desperation, Siegfried and Odette throw themselves in the lake, and at last the spell is broken by the power of their eternal undying love for each other.
